How to Teach Writing
Teaching Creative Writing
Along with drawing on life experiences, our students need to have a solid grasp of the mechanics of good writing skills and how to play with words to be able to adequately tell their stories.
No doubt about it - teaching elementary writing is a complex topic where there are as many variables as there are students and teachers. These are the essentials of teaching writing to children: - Focus on small moments they have personally experienced
- Write for real audiences at least some of the time
- Romance your students to develop a love of word play and figurative language
- Teach the rules of good writing - punctuation, capital letters…the mechanics do matter!
- Use mentor texts to provide a foundation for styles of writing
- Understand the stages of writing children progress through
- Provide many opportunities to experience writing every day
- Guide students through the writing process
- Be encouraging of their efforts and allow them to share frequently
There are certainly more teaching writing strategies, and I bet you are thinking of a few I may have left out!
