We know that games and activities for kids make learning much more engaging.
Elementary spelling games are perfect for engaging your students.
Interactive spelling word games for your classroom are great to use either as a stand alone lesson or a quick filler.
Teaching spelling using different learning styles will benefit your students by helping them to use all areas of their brains to learn the correct spelling of words.
Elementary Spelling Games
Stomp It! 26 small plastic discs with letters written on them
Divide your class into two teams. Everyone sits in a circle with the discs inside the circle. When a word is called out, each team takes a turn for one child to "stomp" the word. Nobody else can talk, but they can signal their classmate where to go. Assign a point for each correct spelling of words.
Spelling Detective
Write 5-10 spelling words on the board, depending on your students' levels. Say them together, clap out the letters and sounds, then have them close their eyes - No Peeking!
Change the spelling for 2-3 words. Challenge the class to find the words that are now misspelled. If they identify it and can correctly spell it, the class gets a point. If they make a mistake, the teacher gets a point!
You may want to have them use "thumbs up" for a silent cheer as some spelling word games get very noisy!
Spelling "Bee" Some spelling word games are just too cute, and this one is it!
Choose one student to be the spelling "Bee." As he or she buzzes around the room, the children chant this verse:
"Spelling Bee, Spelling Bee, buzzing on your spelling spree." "Ha ha, hee hee, you can't sting ME!"
The Bee then stops and stands behind the student he or she is closest to. That student must spell the word the teacher gives. If it is spelled correctly, that student now gets to be the Bee.
Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe
Before the lesson, make a large tic-tac-toe board on the floor. Divide the class into two teams and stand them in two lines. Call out a spelling word for each team. If a team member gets it correct, that student gets to choose a square to stand in with either their X or O. Team members may not tell the student where to stand, or play moves to the other team. Continue play until one team wins or it's a draw.
Jumping Jack Spelling
Note: You may want to close the door or take it outside!
Make two or three teams with your class. Tell them that they are going to use jumping jacks to spell their words. As you call out a word, the team is to jumping jack it while chanting the letters. Tricky part: if the team doesn't stay together with the chanting and jumping jacks, they do not get a point. There must be teamwork to score!
Word Scramble
Type the spelling words in a bold font and cut each word apart. Place the words into envelopes and divide the students into groups. Give each group a few envelopes and instruct them to choose one. When you say, "Go!" the teams open the envelopes and try to be the first team to put the word together. To make it even more challenging, add an extra letter or two that they will not use to spell the target word!
Play continues until you have gone through all the envelopes.
Refried Beans Lima beans with letters written on them
Place a scoop of lima beans into a baggie. Give the students 5 minutes to see how many words they can make using the beans. This game will really show who knows the correct spelling of words!
Letter Wars
Read the story The War Between the Vowels and Consonants. Then hand out letter tiles and call out words for the students to make based on the story. Not really spelling word games, but a fun activity including reading skills.
