Ohio Teacher Salary

Ohio teacher salary - is there a common ground with Gov. Kasich teacher salary cuts? The average elementary school teacher salary for Ohio is certainly under attack.

The salary of a teacher is a hot topic in education right now, and the push for change is sweeping the nation.

Change can be good, but not when it is based on misconceptions, uninformed opinion stated as fact and has the potential to cause great harm.

Sometimes current issues in education aren't as black and white as politicians would like.

It seems that Governor Kasich is changing tactics in his pay-scale reform agenda. Perhaps he is recognizing the intense opposition there is to his previous proposals?

Now Senate Bill 5 is House Bill 5. It is largely the same, and continues to vilify teachers and other civil servants. However, now the Governor wants to hear input on Ohio teacher salary scales. Here is what he has to say:

“Currently, teachers are paid largely on the basis of how many years they’ve been on the job. That’s not fair because it fails to recognize the successes of Ohio’s highest-performing educators. I want to hear from those teachers who want a better way and who have ideas for how to get us there. I look forward to working with them to create a better way.”

~Governor John R. Kasich

Kasich Teacher Salary Cuts

He went further with explaining his thoughts about a public school teacher salary in Ohio on youTube:

Darn it all, he always sounds so good, and I really want to like him and believe he is going to do what is best for Ohio schools. I just can't yet, but I will voice my opinion.

This is the beginning to the response I wrote to Governor Kasich:

"Before I offer ideas, I would like to address the merit pay system theory. There is an inherent problem with the merit pay system in education.

It is not that I am afraid of it - I am a teacher who would be paid very well under it.

The issue, for me, is that it cuts at the heart of what teaching really is: collaboration, mentorship, and growing children at their developmental levels.

Merit pay has the potential to kill..."

How about you? If you live in Ohio and submit your ideas, how about posting it here to share with fellow educators? If you don't live in Ohio, what are your opinions? Even if you live in Michigan, I'll post your comments!
