Journal Writing Ideas

Journal writing prompts to use as a daily writing prompt.

Journal writing ideas for all primary students. Teaching creative writing just got easier!

Why should you use journal writing topics in your classroom?

  • Powerful Brainstorming
  • Often the best ideas come when we just write about anything, and that is the same for our students. This doesn't mean you don't give a topic - do if you want to! Some students need a topic to get going and they can brainstorm different things from there. Journal writing ideas can make this happen.

  • Builds Student Confidence
  • Even struggling writers can achieve writing confidence if they know their journaling will not be formally assessed but viewed as a time for self-expression, intercommunication and an opportunity to try new techniques and ideas.

  • Promotes Memory
  • Students who have issues with short-term memory can really benefit from journal writing. When they have to write about their day, an activity they did with the family last night, a special trip they just took...this works on their memory skills. The teacher should gently prod and question for details to help the student recall more information to write.
