Career Change Teacher

A "career change teacher" is someone who has found a new calling - becoming a teacher. Have you been thinking about a career change?

Reinventing Yourself as a Teacher

It’s tough to know what you “want to be when you grow up” when you go to college.

It is likely that we may reach a point in our careers when we want a change. That is what happened to Jennifer Stiglic from The Dog Ate My Blog, when she realized she wanted to become a teacher.

That revelation came to her when she realized she wanted to use her skills to work with children.

She loved to read and write, which is what drove her to originally pursue a career in PR. However, she was now ready for becoming a teacher.

Changing a career is never easy, but Jennifer has found that being an educator has been very rewarding.

Her story about becoming a teacher is below.

The Career Change Teacher

Jennifer became a resume writer to continue my passion for writing and helping others, but also went back to school to get a degree in education.

Many people questioned her motives for being a career change teacher. Did she want to have more time for her kids or have summers off?

Any teacher will tell you that if these are your reasons for becoming a teacher, you will not last in a classroom!
Once you start school, you realize there are few professions as admirable, strategic and critical as being a teacher. You learn very quickly after starting school (again) that there is more to teaching than coloring and crowd control.

To be a successful teacher, it requires careful modification of lesson plans to meet the needs of diverse learners, incorporating different teaching styles to target multiple intelligences…and you still need to communicate with parents, administrators, students and other teachers.

Jennifer says her work day begins early and ends Sunday night when lesson planning is complete…and she love every minute of it!

A career change teacher might begin at the bottom of the ladder, no matter how high you climbed in your previous career.

This can be a tough concept to grasp, but what you need to realize is that you are starting fresh as a new professional.

You do, however, bring proven experience to the table; your skills from a previous career will make you a valuable teacher.

The skills that can help you as a teacher are ones that can cross over in a career change to teaching. These include working with clients, managing multiple projects, working in collaborative groups and having content area expertise. These skills can help set you apart from other candidates.

Jennifer teaches Mass Media and Communications in a middle school. Her previous career, combined with her Masters of Elementary Education Degree, has made her uniquely qualified for this position.

As soon as you decide to go back to school to become a teacher, start spending time in different classrooms to figure out what grade and classes you would like to teach.

The relationships you build now will help you once you complete your teaching certification and venture into an exciting stage of your life.
